About Us

Having played in goal since the age of four, Ben was born with a passion for the game which is infectious and pulses through all his sessions. Growing up he spent seven years as a player in Peterborough United’s academy, working with and learning from some of the best coaches in the country.

Ben is an FA qualified coach with four years’ experience of coaching in a professional environment with Peterborough United’s academy. Ben also spent two years as Lead Academy Goalkeeping Coach at Boston United’s Academy and is currently into his fifth season as First Team Goalkeeping Coach at Spalding United. Having coached for over 15 years, the vision for Ben Derbyshire GK to continue to deliver engaging and productive coaching sessions to an even wider net of keepers is well and truly underway.

Coaching Philosophy

Our philosophy at Ben Derbyshire GK is built on four pillars –

Person first, player second – At our core, we’re developing the person. We cultivate an environment that’s both supportive and challenging, underpinned by a culture of of respect, hard work, and togetherness. In our training environment, keepers push each other to improve while celebrating each other’s successes.

Brilliant Basics – The fundamentals are so important. All of our keepers will learn the basics of handling, positing, footwork, diving and distribution. All of these skills are vital to all keepers at the start of their goalkeeping journey.

Resilience – Confidence is not taught – it’s built. As goalkeepers ourselves, we know what a lonely position it can be at times. We really try to emphasise mental resilience in our keepers, equipping them to recover quickly from mistakes quickly, handle feedback constructively and give them the confidence to perform at their best even in times of adversity.

Match Realistic Practice – All of our sessions and practices are designed from our bespoke goalkeeping syllabus, aimed at creating the same type of pictures and scenarios they are likely to face in their matches at the weekend.
